Shared chimneys and repeated pilot outages
When a gas water heater and a furnace vent into the same masonry chimney, the flue was sized for both appliances running. Replace the furnace with a high-efficiency model that side-vents through the wall, and the water heater is suddenly alone on a chimney far too large for it. Draft never properly establishes, and the pilot drops out on cold days.
This is one of the most common causes of a heater that works fine all summer and fails every winter. Replacing the thermocouple repeatedly will not fix it — the diagnosis belongs with pilot light repair and venting rather than with parts.
Tight basements, older installations
Rowhome basements here are narrow, often partly finished, and frequently short on combustion air once a door has been added or a wall closed in. A gas heater starved of air produces the yellow flames and soot covered under burner repair, and modern units simply lock themselves out when the flame arrestor screen clogs.
What we get called for
- Gas water heater repair — thermocouples, gas valves and draft problems
- Leaks in basements with no floor drain nearby
- Rumbling and popping from tanks that have never been flushed
- Replacement where getting a new tank down a narrow stair is the real constraint
On replacements in attached housing, physical access usually decides the job. Stair width, ceiling height and the turn at the bottom of the steps determine which units can actually be brought in.

Questions we get asked
Why does my pilot light only go out in winter?
Almost always a draft problem rather than a part failure. Cold weather and a chimney that is now oversized for a single appliance stop the flue establishing draft, and the pilot is blown out.
Can a new furnace affect my water heater?
Yes, and it frequently does. If a high-efficiency furnace was side-vented and left the water heater alone on the old chimney, the venting no longer suits the appliance and draft problems follow.
